Jin-Heon Jung
I am a third year Ph. D. student in cultural anthropology. I live with my wife, Sumi, and my 1 year-old son, Do-Yun. I was a prize-winning poet in my teens in South Korea and studied Korean Literature at Hanyang University. I began studying anthropology in 1999 in an M.A. program at Hanyang University. Through anthropology I became engaged in designing and managing education programs for North Korean youth in South Korea. I am currently working as a research assistant for a project on Korean American families in the Chicago area. I am currently refining a dissertation project on religion in a post-colonial and transnational context, by focusing on South Korean Christian mission projects in East Asia focused on North Koreans. I hope that this project will allow me to examine questions of ethnicity, citizenship, gender, and class that color the North Koreans encounter in South Korea; as well as the nation-state and nationalisms implicated in the reunification process of two Koreas.
